Growing up in rural Wisconsin with six brothers was an early introduction to the great outdoors. Fishing, boating, hunting, and frequent trips "up north" to the lake were a part of everyday life.

These roots influenced Pam's love of the natural world and wildlife. While others were filling in coloring books Pam went through reams of paper sketching objects from nature that inspired her.

Art education of that era however had a different focus. Rather than her love of realism "pop art" was in vogue. Pam took a different course entirely and graduated with a BSN, married and raised two children. During this time she kept up her drawing skills. An oil painting class in 1991 hooked Pam immediately and with the support of her family she began enrolling in courses and workshops around the country with professional artists whose work she admired. After meeting and studying with Ann Templeton in NM in 1994 Pam was certain she wanted to further develop her talents and paint full time. Travel and full time study soon reaped it's rewards as she began entering juried shows and gaining recognition and sales. It was plein air painting that seemed to combine Pam's talents with her love of the outdoors.

"So much of nature is breathtaking and being close to my subject matter is so important to gaining an understanding of its essence. When I can capture that on canvas I feel the painting is a success. The late afternoon light on a field of hay bales for instance is an incredible sight but so too are the intoxicating smells of the fresh cut hay, the sounds of the birds and insects at that time of day and the texture of the ground beneath my feet. The painting becomes an experience I would not have had in my studio. Later, as I look at one of my finished works, all the sights, sounds, and smells come back as if I were once again in that moment. It is a total sensory experience to relive all the places I've traveled and painted. To convey this to others through my paintings is a joy. Frequently I like to include a brief description of this experience on the back of my paintings for my patrons. I feel grateful to have had some wonderful teachers and the works of the masters to guide me. I admire so many but my absolute favorite is the work of Joaquin Sorrolla. I feel privileged to follow in their footsteps and to enjoy creating art for a living."

Pam describes her style as expressive realism. Using strong values and a warm palette, Pam enjoys capturing the mood of her surroundings as it relates to the light hitting the subject. "Often times I will push color a bit but that is the artist's prerogative. I want to have others see it as I do in my minds eye."

Pam currently lives in Portland, OR and is enjoying a multitude of new vistas and plein air experiences. Her works can be found in galleries of the Pacific NW. Pam participates in local and national art associations, juried competitions, and enjoys teaching and mentoring others. Her works can be found in public and private collections.
